Meet our creator of the month - tania_huiny

This month, we are happy to bring to light a new, but dear, creator named tania_huiny. This creative soul from Indonesian joined eyeka in April 2019, and she has already won 5 prizes. When we asked her about her favorite mantra, she said: ""Strive and strive to the max! and "Keep on Jiayou (add oil) - (real meaning: keep the spirit up!) -  if what the local here says ;)" Let's know more about her!

Tell us a bit more about yourself …

I'm an Indonesian, decided to pack my bag 6 years ago and come to China alone. Have been staying here in Beijing for almost 3 years, keep on striving to create an impactful works here, trying to be the next 'Jack Ma' (Note: Founder of Alibaba), no matter how difficult all the circumstances are here.

I have worked in advertising agencies for more than 15 years.  Having been staying in 3 major cities, Jakarta, Shanghai & Beijing for these past years of have definitely shaped me in many ways in terms of thinking ideas culturally and globally, despite all the boundaries that I've encountered in my creative professional life.

How did you find out about eyeka?

Somehow, I don't quite remember how I encountered Eyeka in the very beginning. Yet, I'm very grateful that I've did and really wish I found Eyeka much much earlier. Yet, better late than never, I guess.

Do you have a creative process? If so, can you share a bit of your secret with our community? Where do you look for inspiration?

Honestly, I don't really have a specific creative process. Somehow, a big passion to create something new, different and can give bigger impact to the society, has been my biggest drive. I love how Eyeka write their brief and I do believe the importance of having a good brief, in result of having good creative ideas. The excitement of reading a good brief, afterwards doing bit of research here and there, sleep on it for a while, then read the brief again 1-2 times afterwards just sit on it, try to find meaning of each words in the brief, and explore the ideas, through many sorts of ways: strolling around my neighborhood, window shopping, hanging out with friends, reading some random articles. Then go back again to the brief, and somehow naturally from the insights that I've got from doing all these daily activities can connect to the brief itself.

Haha.. sounds random. But, the point is I believe start with a great passion to do it, and really dedicate specific time and thoughts into it.

You seem particularly comfortable with product innovation challenges. Where does that come from?

Somehow I didn't realize this is coming actually, as my day to day professional activities for this past 15 years has been doing more to integrated advertising campaign for clients, but though aside from that I have a great passion in doing my own initiative ideas that beyond the normal client's brief. As this coming years, having a deep interest in reading about startups and digital innovations, I guess have made me interested in combining creativity into product and service innovations.

When submitting an entry, how do you keep positive if it is rejected or not selected as a winning entry?

Humanly, I always get disappointed when my submissions got rejected, especially if the ideas that I really believe in and have spent much time on, were being killed by the moderator in the very beginning. Though usually moderator always say it nicely : "need improvement" and yet afterwards it got killed, which just happened to one of the brief before. Usually I keep on striving more and more, as I like challenges. I don't easily take rejection and let it go. "Strive until it last" has been my motto, i guess, even until the very last minute of the submission deadline ;)

What would you like to achieve (or have already achieved) with the prizes you will win/have won?

I have a big dream with Eyeka, actually. Maybe sounds crazy, but I do wish to have an early retirement and just focus on doing Eyeka's briefs and my personal creative passions to support my life and some part to send back home for my family.

If you had to describe eyeka in 3 words, what would they be?

Exciting, Challenging, Addictive

Finally, is there anything you would like to share with our creators (secret, tip…)?

Not really a secret tip, but basically if you have the passion in doing it and really focus on it, I believe we can achieve what we want. Sounds cliche, maybe, but somehow it's true, at least for me.

Meet our Creator of the Month - chrisjones64

This month, we are glad to present you chrisjones64, who is going to celebrate his 1st anniversary as an eyeka creator on October 19th. This creative mind likes to follow his mantra: "Live outside the box"... and we all want to learn more about it! Read this article and wish Chris all the best for the rest of his eyeka journey!

Tell us a bit more about yourself (what have you done/worked/studied, where do you live, what do you like most about your country/city, what characterizes you the most and anything you feel comfortable sharing) …
I grew up in a small seaside town in the North East of England, not far from Newcastle. From very young, I felt that there was so much to experience beyond my home town and have spent my life seeking out these new horizons. After moving to London to study Graphic Design and starting my first job in an agency, I had itchy feet and ended up moving to France at the age of 25. I didn’t speak the language and knew nobody there. But I wanted to explore my own creativity through painting, photography and music. Of course, it’s not easy to make a living when you are creating purely for yourself, so I had to go back to the agency world. I ended up staying 7 years in Paris, which is where I met my wife and kindred spirit. Together we decided to move to the other side of the world and we landed in Hong Kong. That was 1996. My new focus was on all things internet and I built a new career as a digital creative specialist. It led me to Sydney where we lived for four years, back to Paris again then on to Amsterdam before coming to Shanghai. Just over 3 years ago we came back to Hong Kong. It’s quite a crazy life but it some ways it really sums up how my mind works. Never standing still, always curious for something new. In the past few years, I’ve tried to come back to my original goal of creating for myself, with many personal projects that have stretched me further. Writing was always something that appealed to me, so I started self-publishing books on Amazon Kindle. So far, I’ve written two books related to personal/career development and another about the intersection of creativity and strategy in business. Being a lifelong science fiction fan, I also decided to write my own series of short stories under the name Christopher Hart. I set up a website to promote the series which is called Outmode: http://www.outmode.info

The internet is great for giving everyone a platform to be creative. So I recently decided to do something with my photographic hobby and launched my own photo print gallery and store under the name CJAY: https://cjay-art.darkroom.tech

I’m a big believer in being multi-faceted as a creative person. Creativity is like electricity, which can be used to power a blender or give us light, drive a car, generate sounds etc. If we are creative people, then there is no reason we can’t apply it to anything we imagine. We might not always succeed but the outcome might surprise us.

How did you find out about eyeka?

Being someone in the digital industry from the beginning, I’ve always followed the latest developments. I read about eyeka when it first launched but never got involved myself being so busy with my career. There have been a few similar platforms that appeared over the years but eyeka is the one that has survived and thrived. It’s like the Airbnb of creativity. The Uber of ideas.

On October 19th, you’ll celebrate your 1st anniversary as an eyeka creator. How does it feel? What did eyeka bring you over this last year?

Since the last couple of years for me have been about reviving my creative self-expression, I thought it would be interesting to finally look into eyeka as a way to have a little fun. When you work for as long as I have in the advertising industry, you end up spending more time managing people or projects and less time being the one that comes up with the ideas. So for me, eyeka has been something of a playground, letting my mind loose on some really diverse projects without someone breathing down my neck. It’s also fun to work alone rather than in a group. There is a real trend these days for brainstorming, which I feel can lead to ideas that end up looking like they were designed by committee. Einstein didn’t hold workshops! Nothing beats a person sitting alone who has that light bulb moment. Eyeka is a platform that allows individuals to have those flashes of inspiration on their own.

Do you have a creative process? If so, can you share a bit of your secret with our community? Where do you look for inspiration?

People in the advertising or design industry tend to be very self-referential. They look at all the awarded work from their own industry and take inspiration from their peers (or rivals). To be truly original you need to be open to everything. The world is full of amazing examples of creative thinking, in art, fashion, architecture, science, literature, filmmaking and more. If we can soak it all up like sponges, then our minds can make unexpected connections. As for my creative process, I’ve found that the best way to solve a creative challenge is to not think about it. Yes, that sounds like strange advice. Distract yourself, get away from all the screens that demand out attention and do something totally different. Go for a walk, visit a gallery… Your subconscious will join the dots and offer up something amazing. Now you can focus on that rough idea and polish it to perfection.

When submitting an entry, how do you keep positive if it is rejected or not selected as a winning entry?
After working in creative industries for so long you get used to rejection. Creative people can be very sensitive and it’s not easy to develop a thick skin. Even if my idea isn’t accepted, I still believe in it. We need to believe in what we do. The moment you doubt yourself it’s like being a tightrope walker who looks down. You’ll start to wobble and lose confidence (maybe even fall to your death). So always keep your head up and keep moving forwards.

What would you like to achieve (or have already achieved) with the prizes you will win/have won?

As you can probably tell, I’m something of a nomad who loves to explore new places. My goal is to use eyeka prizes as a travel fund to go somewhere I’ve never been before.

If you had to describe eyeka in 3 words, what would they be?
open, democratic, inspirational

Finally, is there anything you would like to share with our creators (secret, tip…)?

Not long ago, I was a student mentor at an advertising event in Shanghai. One thing that I told them ended up becoming the subject of my latest book Autocreativity. If you want to be creative, you need to be someone that is truly original. The famous 20th century writer and thinker George Bernard Shaw said this: “Life isn’t about finding yourself. Life is about creating yourself.” So we need to take what’s unique about ourselves and nurture it, fuel our originality so we can stand out in a cookie-cutter world. I’ve interviewed so many creative people over the years. Too many were indistinguishable from each other. Be different, go your own path and start creating who you truly want to become as an individual.

This week, we are delighted to present one of our greatest creators: conceptionredaction! This creative French person has many things to share...

As an introduction, is there a quote you like to follow as your mantra?

Living in Australia and being a surfer leads you to follow one obvious mantra: “Go with the flow”!

Tell us a bit more about yourself…

So, I’ll start by this: English is not my first language, so please bear with me hahaha!

I studied Art in France for 4 years and then Communication in Belgium for 4 more years. Then I started working as a creative copywriter in Paris, Geneva, Montreal, Paris again, then I moved to Melbourne 6 years ago. There, I went back to school to study furniture design and started a small business: http://ateliercayelle.com. Since then, I’m living between Melbourne and Paris, alternating between product design and a freelance contract in advertising: https://mariecopywriter.com/.

You’re French and you live in Australia: can you tell us more about it?

Australia was a real “coup de coeur” for me: landscapes, fauna, lifestyle… I spent a month there on holiday and I knew straight away that I wanted to stay. I wasn’t speaking English at that time (and I am still learning) so the move was not completely smooth… It took a lot of compromise as I could not work as a copywriter there … but I still loved my job … and that’s when eyeka happened!

How did you find out about eyeka?

I was studying English full time, and Furniture Design on top of that, but after 2 years, my English started to be good enough that I could share ideas and concepts. I started looking for advertising competitions on google, as I wanted to go back to copywriting and idea generation. I found an eyeka competition and entered it - that’s how it all started. Now I participate mostly when I am in Australia, designing products. However, if a brief is really appealing to me and I am in an advertising agency, I will still do it, on the side, at the weekends.

Do you have a creative process? Where do you look for inspiration?

For me, the easiest way to go is to let it sink into the back of my mind. I read the brief, do a bit of research and then I get on with my life. I surf, I go to work, I do yoga, I do my grocery shopping … until something happens that makes me think: “Wait, that would be great…” That’s when I go back to the computer again.

So, inspiration is everywhere, really.

When submitting an entry, how do you keep positive if it is rejected or not selected as a winner?

I only enter briefs that are fun for me to do. So, the process of submitting an entry is not 100% about winning. Sure, it’s good to be rewarded, but an idea is always really subjective. A client might love it, another one might hate it… And the next brief is always another chance.

Also, I found that each brief is really insightful in terms of what the brands are looking for, which target audience they are trying to reach and why… All that leads me to do some research that is then really useful in my other work as a designer or as a copywriter.

What would you like to achieve with the prizes you win?

Winning allows me to spend more time designing products. When I have a bit more cash, I am less in a rush to find the next contract, and I can slow down the pace a bit.

If you had to describe eyeka in 3 words, what would they be?

Playful, Addictive and Insightful.

I bought my latest surfboard thanks to eyeka hahaha!

Meet our creator of the month - Abdiel Hernan!

This week, let's read more about a very creative member of the community, Abdiel_Hernan! This creative soul from Guadalajara (Mexico) joined eyeka more than 2 years ago and won 11 prizes. This success can be explained by his favorite mantra: “Do only what makes you happy”. You definitely want to know more about his creative background and process!


Tell us a bit more about yourself.

I'm a faithful believer that we live in a state of constant flux, before it was very easy to define yourself, because you were really an artist, architect or journalist and basically you only were one profession. Since I was a child, I have felt multifaceted, I have always felt fragmented.

I consider myself a trans-disciplinary creator. A lover of pencil, food and simple things. A good friend and lousy godfather, obsessive, scathing, honest, passionate and bold. An ideas dealer from the University of Guadalajara, graduated in Arts. I currently work from my own studio Dondon Concept Design, based in Guadalajara, Mexico. Developing art direction, design, packaging, illustration and fetish objects for agencies and brands.

I like to eat pitayas and I love folklore and ingenious Mexican. In my spare time if I'm not walking with my beautiful girlfriend, I'm usually cooking for my friends or enjoying a beer; sometimes all at once.

How did you find out about eyeka?

Two years ago, when I started my own project and after having working for more than 9 years in the advertising industry, I wondered why advertising had to comply with these boring rules of the 1950’s, while other industries related to Entertainment can play with much free ideas.

Then I looked for options to have fun and create more freely, so I found the eYeka platform; to my surprise my first entries were within the short list. I currently have more than 10 contests won, part of the profits I use to know destinations.

Do you have a creative process? If so, can you share a bit of your secret with our community? Where do you look for inspiration?

I'm a meticulous, obsessive and disciplined guy, I consider that travel, read, take the time to breathe and appreciate the world, stimulates us, makes us create, imagine and connect in more meaningful ways, there is nothing more sustainable than beautiful things.

My creation process is very random but thorough, I believe in the mix of disciplines to cause unusual approaches to ideas and achieve interesting results.

When submitting an entry, how do you keep positive if it is rejected or not selected as a winning entry?

In the creative industry it's often thought that when you do something right, you gain confidence, but the opposite happens with ideas. Every time you have a good idea it becomes more difficult, because it's believed that it’s difficult to have another one. However, create is a necessity that requires work on something completely new, always! Conceive new challenges is a way of feel that I keep moving forward.

Failure is a constant in life, but it’s the only way, for analysis and learn, is the only route to write completely different stories.

What would you like to achieve (or have already achieved) with the prizes you will win/have won?

I spend it on travel, food, and sometimes I use it to fund a variety of personal projects. Right now, I'm working on “Monogram; nothing is fancy” a collection of leather goods that reinvents everyday objects for a contemporary lifestyle.

If you had to describe eyeka in 3 words, what would they be?

Brands, recreation and coffee.

Finally, is there anything you would like to share with our creators?

Don't spend much time in bed, unless it's Sunday, and you have an amazing smile by your side.

On the other way, the people around you always tell you: define yourself, learn, focus you, do only one thing, specialize and be clear about what you are doing. But what if you like art, philosophy, carpentry, biology, business and things that maybe have nothing to do? Suddenly, over time, it seems that it is good not to be just one thing, because you extract all that background that now becomes a superpower.

Meet our creators of the month - Vira and Nadia!

This week, we are happy to present you not one but two creators: Nadia (nadinevash) and Vira (veravashtext)! These twin sisters are very active on eyeka, and together, they have won almost 10 prizes. That’s awesome! When we asked them about their favorite quote, here is what they answered: “We are our choices”, from Jean-Paul Sartre. And that says a lot about them! But surely not enough, so let’s read more about them.

Tell us a bit more about yourself.
We’re twin sisters, both 18 years old. As for now, we live in Ukraine and study at the University here. For a major, we chose Advertising and Public Relations - needless to say, our creative experience on eyeka has heavily contributed to this decision.

While most young people that pursue advertising consider joining agencies or in-house departments, the business side of advertising is not as appealing to us. For us advertising is, to begin with, a mean of storytelling. We feel that ads could be similarly creative and impactful as movies are - yet, their creative value is often neglected among companies.

Our yet biggest ambition is to start a production agency capable of taking on small-scale and large-scale projects - ads, movie production, music videos. The experience of presenting ideas, writing scripts, and laying out storyboards we get on eyeka is priceless to such an extent that we often consider the platform our second university.

How did you find out about eyeka?
In 2016, we were looking for creative contests for advertisers, writers, and filmmakers. eyeka immediately stood out with its friendliness and freedom. Firstly, we were in it mostly for portfolio and money rewards, so, naturally, we picked a contest with the highest budget in pursuit of these goals. We gathered a creative team from our classmates (they were kind enough to wake up at 4 AM and go shoot a horrible script with us). The idea of a video was bad, so we never uploaded it - but it was fun.

After that, we put our eyeka participation on hold, and came back a year later, in 2017. At that point, we already knew that we want to pursue scriptwriting, creating concepts and scripts for advertising. So, eyeka, again, was a perfect playground. We uploaded our first entry, and while the original concept of that entry still seems great, the visuals were horrible. Of course, we didn’t win.

However, we got luckier with our second contest and got a second prize (it’s still remembered as one of the best days of our creative life). When your work receives recognition, you get a strong motivation to continue. Later, we started exploring product design - and it turned out to be very rewarding as well.

Do you have a creative process? If so, can you share a bit of your secret with our community? Where do you look for inspiration? How is a creative process with a twin sister?
We have often struggled to create a ‘winning entry algorithm’ on eyeka - a set of rules that should help us estimate the entry’s shot at winning. Long story short, we failed. At first, it was even discouraging to not be able to predict what type of entry will win the next contest. Then, we realized the lack of strict rules gives us the freedom to explore as many thought currents as possible.

We usually read all briefs in the categories of ‘Creative Writing’ - we’re yet to master design, and the community has a strong pool of designers with whom it’d be unreasonable to compete. Then, no matter if we ‘feel’ the brief or not, we do quick research on market trends. Then close the laptop and wander off to watch an episode of a favorite TV show absentmindedly thinking about the idea.

A few hours later (possibly, the next day), we run a quick brainstorming session writing all ideas down in the mobile notepad. We have no idea how other creators manage to define the worth of an idea - we prioritize them by the amount of time and effort needed for execution - start with those that are straightforward and well-outlined leaving more complex and challenging ones for later.

We always upload 3-4 entries per contest exploring various facets of the brief. For the contest on Elderly Mobility solutions, we uploaded over 5 entries that would be both small-scale and large scale, governmentally backed or local. Seeing how we got the second prize for one of those entries, exploring the brief from different angles has become our permanent strategy.

We’re not too disciplined when it comes to uploading new entries - in fact, last-minute uploads are certainly in our book. None of our last-minute entries have won - that’s why taking your time and uploading with a head start is a way, way better approach.

Duffer Brothers, the executive producers of Stranger Things and screenwriters, talked at a great length about how working with a twin feels - and we relate so much. In particular, they said that it’s a great pleasure to work with a sibling because you can shut down each other’s ideas in the worst fashion ever - and still work together. But we also understand each other’s idea without saying and often arrive at the same concept simultaneously - this looks like some advanced telepathy to others.

But it’s pretty cool because each of us can count on someone with the same creative vision, yet the perspective will still be somewhat different. Playing the devil’s advocate when nitpicking each other’s ideas is also pretty helpful since it leads to a more detailed understanding of the concept.

When submitting an entry, how do you keep positive if it is rejected or not selected as a winning entry?
The answer is simple: we really don’t. We doubt ourselves a lot - especially lately we had a bunch of entries that we never uploaded because we felt like they don’t adhere to our inner standards. That’s, actually, a terrible practice because creators hardly can evaluate their work properly at the moment (you need time and perspective).

But yeah, self-doubt is our worst enemy and it never really goes away. So, if the entry is rejected, we can be obsessing over it for a while, especially if we thought it to have winning potential. If it doesn’t win, we don’t feel that sad. The thing is, there is no entitlement about winning - each time when we get a prize or reward, we are genuinely surprised and humbled. There are just so many amazing creators on the platform that the idea of someone choosing our entry feels like an enormous privilege.

The first thing we do is check the entries of those who won in a feedback circle and understand how it adheres to the brief. However, it’s not the best idea to try to understand these things rationally. eyeka is always full of surprises, although quality and originality almost constantly play the key role. 

What would you like to achieve (or have already achieved) with the prizes you will win/have won?
We save our prizes and occasionally travel. We don’t have a clear idea of what we would want to pursue - there are a lot of possibilities, opened for evaluation. So, until we figure out our next moves, we prefer to save all the prizes. This way, we will be able to invest them into a meaningful project - once we decide what that project would be.

If you had to describe eyeka in 3 words, what would they be?
Learning, enthusiasm, support

Finally, is there anything you would like to share with our creators (secret, tip…)?
Don’t be so harsh on procrastination. People are always urged to be productive but for creative ones, procrastination is often a fuel. A lot of our creative ideas were driven by TV shows, music, anime. Don’t obsess about always being efficient (we tend to do that a lot) - just chill. Also, make your work process as pleasant as possible. While we work, we listen to anime soundtracks (Death Note, Naruto, Madoka Magica), turn on Youtube videos and listen to them as podcasts. Just find your own habit that would turn work into play for you. This way, even if you fail, at least you had some fun.

And don’t doubt yourself. Be confident about your choices, even if everyone else is not.
