Did you know that by 2050 it is estimated there will be more plastic than fish in the world’s oceans? Today we are more and more confronted with the effects of plastic: planet Earth is becoming ‘planet plastic’. Yet, only 14% of plastic packaging used globally makes its way to recycling plants, 40% ends up in landfill and a third in fragile ecosystems.
The exact size of plastic debris patches is unknown, but it is estimated that 1.2 to 2.4 million metric tons of plastic enter the ocean each year from rivers and the Great Pacific Garbage Patch (the largest accumulation of plastic floating in the Pacific Ocean) is estimated to cover an area up to the size of Russia!
Treating plastic packaging as a valuable resource to be managed efficiently and effectively is a key priority in achieving Sustainable consumption and production.
This contest aims to inspire people to move to recyclable packaging only and to encourage them to recycle on their end.
