Hey eYeka!

Henri Matisse once said: “Creativity takes courage” and what we love about our community is the courageous bold ideas we get every single day by you! Today, we would like to introduce to you our creator of the month Vohary who’s only been on eYeka since December 2017!

Tell us a bit more about yourself

Hello! My name is Vohary but people know me as Sawyer, I’m 24 years old. I’m an artist based in Madagascar which is an island in the Indian ocean. I live in the capital, Antananarivo, a very crowded place like all cities I think. At University, I studied English literature and arts, then I studied featured documentary during a short period but the program had to stop because of political issues. I worked first as an art teacher in primary school but I had always been a freelance illustrator at the same time. I like reading, watching movies and everything about Harry Potter. My dream is to become a full-time creative artist, doing illustrations and working on some amazing projects, but the reality does not allow it yet. In fact, Madagascar is a poor country which makes everything more complicated when you want to be an independent creator. I had to learn through the years to survive while keeping both my creativity and my dreams alive! I keep focusing on the good sides of my life and what inspire me, such as Harry Potter’s universe, nature, meeting people and their cultures. Actually, I work as a video maker but I’ve got a book project that I’d like to accomplish. I still want to have my own studio and work for my own business.

How did you find out about eYeka?

It’s funny because I found eYeka when I was thinking about all these plans and I wanted to find a way to fund my projects. I came from work that night, I was tired and I just typed “works for illustrators” on Google, then I discovered eYeka which was on the first line. It was the first time I heard about it, and I told myself “why not”. In addition, I was motivated by the fact that that there’s more humanity behind it, which is not the case in most of the creative platforms I’ve been in. Then I found out a cute contest which fitted to my personality and I did it.

Do you have a creative process? If so, can you share a bit of your secret with our community? Where do you look for inspiration?

The first thing I do when I want to create is waiting. I don’t like forcing myself and making something that I’m going to hate after. So I go out doing things I like, or I go on the Internet and watch my favorite artists’ pages/blogs/channels, just to encourage myself by saying “if they can, I can”. When my motivation comes, I sketch my ideas first before concretely realizing them. The thing is that you have to be productive while not putting pressure on yourself. Whenever you can, whenever you have the strength, keep sketching your ideas!

When submitting an entry, how do you keep positive if it is rejected or not selected as a winning entry?

Well, this is very difficult. Since I’ve been rejected many times before eYeka, I guess I got used to deception. Nevertheless, all these experiences taught me to make things with love and not expecting too much, if it’s Ok then I’m happy, if not I just let it go and try again the day after. When you are a creative person, you should not focus on the negativity, just do what you love doing the most and create! Whenever I submit an entry, I just wish it a good luck, then I think about a new project. And that’s how I keep a positive mind.

What would you like to achieve (or have already achieved) with the prizes you will win/have won?

If I win a contest, I would like to buy materials first. Actually, I’m using my office computer (which belongs to the company) and a small Wacom Intuos tablet. But I told myself that I’d invest in materials if I get the chance to have enough money one day. So firstly, I’d buy a MacBook pro and a Cintiq graphic tablet. I’d like to develop my studio as well and to buy some storage cabinets for my art supplies.

If you had to describe eYeka in 3 words, what would they be?

If I had to describe eYeka in 3 words, that would be: humanity, big and hope.

Finally, is there anything you would like to share with our creators (secret, tip…)?

I just want to tell you guys that life is short, do what you love and don’t be discouraged. I know you are working so hard in order to achieve your goals, your dreams, you deserve to be happy so treat yourself right and don’t put too much pressure on yourself. I never thought I’d have to say that to lots of people around the World one day! I used to be invisible in my poor country, but here I am :)

Thank you eYeka for this amazing experiment!

Thank you Vohary! We can’t wait to see your future creations!
