Hello eYeka people!

Summer is here! And it’s time to get some inspiration from our Creator of the Month! Let us introduce you a creator from UK, James Pickles or jamesdesign who has joined eYeka for less than a year but have already won 4 prizes! Curious to know how he did that? Let’s go find out!

Hi James! Can you tell us a bit more about yourself and your story? What do you do besides your great creations on eYeka? Fun facts about you?

Im a 40 year old graphic designer from the UK. I Qualified from university 20 years ago with B.A (Hons) in Graphic design and communication. (Wow! Has it been that long!)

Im currently an ‘In-House’ graphic design manager, working for several different fashion brands. My day to day involves Art Directing photoshoots, creating fashion magazines and press adverts, as well as lots of direct marketing and promotional materials.

What made you interested in design and creative world? Was there any inspiration or a person who inspired you?

From being a very young child I would constantly be drawing whether that be cartoon characters or cars, I would always have a pencil in my hand! I would religiously watch the Rolf Harris TV show as a child (a very well-known cartoonist here in the UK).

It’s very disappointing these days that everything seems to be computer based, there doesn’t seem to be much of a market place for hand drawn illustration in the commercial world. I love design and wouldn’t want to be doing anything else for a living.

I intend to ‘go back to my roots’ and pick up the pencils and paint brushes again later in life, travelling the world painting scenes from around the globe.

You just joined us back in 2016 but you have contributed a lot! Could you tell us how did you find out about us and why did you decide to join?

Yes, I have been a member of eYeka for less than a year now, but pleased to say I have won 4 competitions (so far!). My current role at work can be limiting as far as concepts are concerned with it being fashion based and I really wanted to get involved in doing graphic design work for some big brands in various different sectors, so before I decided to look for another job that would allow me to get involved in doing this, I looked online to see if I could find anywhere I could have this creative output and I’m incredibly pleased to say I found eYeka!

eYeka is the perfect fit for me, it allows me to carry on with the  job I love, but also challenge myself for some great brands in my spare time. (Plus the extra cash is always welcome!)

Can you share your creative process with eYeka contests? How can you come up with a great idea?

My process involves checking the eYeka website every morning whilst I have my morning coffee at home, I look to see if there are any new briefs to work on, I will read through the brief, then on my journey to work I will be thinking about it… Any ideas, thoughts, taglines, etc I will note on my phone, I will have the brief in the back of my mind for the rest of the day and will again just note down any thoughts on my phone. (God bless the iPhone!) Then on an evening I will go through the notes and transfer them to mac, I try to work on how to engage the audience, find the solution to the problem, I look for key words within the brief to find an angle or hook.

Up until now, you have submitted 139 accepted entries and 4 prizes in just a year! How do you do it? Is there any tips and tricks you can share with other creators?

Yes, I’ve been a member for about 9 months, I’m pleased to say I have won 4 competitions. I think that reading the brief and understanding the ‘problem’ the brand has is key to answering the brief. The solution is always right there in the brief, it’s just a case of dissecting it. I often look at the very opposite of some of the keywords I find in the brief to find the answer, i.e if the challenge is to find something light, I will explore how dark is the very opposite… explore the negatives to find the positives (if that makes sense!?)

Do you have a favourite entry that you are especially proud of? If yes, why this one?

Yes, my most recent win is my favourite. I think the quote from the brand on my winning entry was “I absolutely nailed it” It had a perfect tagline for the brand and the visual/concept was challenging the viewer to engage with the product.

What have you been able to do or to achieve with the prizes you have won?

With the prizes I have won it has allowed me to pay off some of the payments on the car I promised myself I would get before I was 40 years old (I managed to get it at 39 years old!) a Porsche 987S 3.4. I also recently got married to my beautiful wife, Samantha and eYeka has allowed me to pay off the wedding bills!

If you could describe eYeka in 3 words, what would that be?

Challenging, addictive, inspiring

And at last, what advices would you give to new creators?

Don’t be afraid to think outside the box. Read the brief and take down ANY thoughts even if you think they won’t lead to a solution, quiet often they do!

Thanks so much for the inspiration! We’re happy to hear that we are indirectly a part of your fancy car and your beautiful wedding ;)
