Videomakers, here are some tips for you!

Jan 23

Dear video makers, you are all very talented and here at eYeka, we are totally agree on that. However, it seems that sometimes you miss out some points while making your video and this can affect your submission.

Thus, the point of this blog post is to give you some tips that can help you to get your video accepted on the first try!

Ready?…. Action !!

DO:

DON’T:

1) Read the rules, brief, and guidelines thoroughly.

Otherwise, you may miss out on some important details and information that may be crucial to your submission.

1) Show any famous brand/logo/celebrity/artwork/character.

They are protected with copyrights, and thus, we advise you to blur logos whenever it’s visible. As for celebrity, artwork, and character, you are simply not allowed to feature them in your creation. We value originality here ;)

2) Create an original story.

Everyone hates copycat, right?

2) Use images that are not free of rights.

Do not use images taken from random websites which author you are not sure of. If you are using images taken from the Internet, do make sure it is copyrights free.

3) Take note of the accepted languages & video duration.

Some brands may have specific preferences on these, so kindly respect it.

3) Use music that is not free of rights.

Music by famous singers/musicians/bands/orchestras are protected by copyrights and you need to obtain a license from them before using it.If you want to use music taken from a website, do make sure the license granted to you allows you to use it for commercial purposes. Or you can also find one with Creative Commons License Attributive 3.0.

4) Take note of submission deadline.

So don’t wait till the last minute to upload your creation. Be wise and upload it ASAP so that if there are changes to be made, it can be done before the contest closes. All of our contests end at 11:59 PM UTC. What is UTC? Click here to find out more about it.

4) Show any famous building/landmark/monument (e.g. The Tower Bridge, The Eiffel Tower, etc.).

Some of them are being protected by copyrights in their respective countries. Hence, it is best not to show them in your creation. Better be safe than sorry ;)

5) Write some media description to explain the story behind your creation.

Treat it like your best friend. Don’t forget to fill it with some information about the idea behind your creation. Also, do write the source of music used in your video and information related to the copyrights of all elements used (images, music, etc.)

5) Show any personal details, whether in your entry or media description.

So no name, house/email address, phone number, website, etc. please.

6) Create a good quality video.

HD format rocks! When your video is in a good format, it will look nicer, won’t it? That means brands will also see it in its prime quality.

6) Feature minors if you have no authorization from their parents.

If you would like to feature a minor (18 years old and below) in your video, you have to obtain a written authorization from his/her parents stating that they agreed to let their child(ren) star in your video.

Other than that, quality sometimes does matter in order for us to accept your submission. Why? Because we have two different types of video contests:

- Those where the brands are just looking for insights/ideas
- and those where brands would like to broadcast the entries on their social media channels. In this case, quality of execution will be one of the points to be considered before accepting your submission.

So try to upload the HD version whenever possible.

So that’s all about it. If you have any doubts or questions, you can always drop us an email via the Support tab on the left side of our website. Thank you for taking some time to read this. It seems that you are now ready to take part in our video contests. Show us your best work! :D

About contests results

Nov 29

eYeka is always trying to announce the winners as fast as we can.
But sometimes, it is not our fault if winners selection take so much time…

Truth is we have to tell you about a problem that happened sometimes.

Explanation:
When a Jury selects winners, the legal process is to contact first all of them to make them sign the licence agreement contract. Once we have them signed,  we can announce the winners on eYeka.

The story is: one of our latest contest’s media has been selected as winner from the Jury. We contacted the creator who realized that he/she was not able to sign the licence agreement contract because he/she was not the owner of all elements used on the media.

Now winners process for this contest is stopped and it will take some extra time to figure out what to do between the Jury and this winner, to find a solution etc… Meaning that all the participants of this contest will be waiting and complaining about eYeka… This would not have happened if the creator had respected the contest’s Infringement Notice.

eYeka community, please listen to us. In most of all briefs, you can find at the bottom the Infringement Notice which is very serious:
Contestants undertake to submit creative and original works.
Contestants warrant that they hold all rights upon submitted works and warrant that the use of the works in the contest does not violate any third parties’ rights.
Contestants acknowledge that in case of breach of these rules, the organizer shall be entitled to deem their participation and the prize granting as void.

It means that you can not use elements taken from Internet, even those coming from the database pretending to be “copyright free”. Most of the time in fact, they can not be used because of the commercial use of our contests.

This means that if you do use elements from Internet, you should not be participating in eYeka contests and you can not win eYeka contests!

It is hard work on moderation to check with you if you are or not the owners of all the elements used, to read all the websites rules and licences, asterisks and tiny footnotes. This process takes a lot of time and very likely  it ends with us having to reject your media because it is not fitting our contest’s rules.

Please find here our article about the Infringement Notice.

Thank you for your understanding!

What the heck does “eYeka” mean?

Feb 11

Hi guys!

Ever wondered what does eYeka really mean? We bet some of you did! ;)

We also realized that some of you were confused on how to spell “eYeka”. Is it [ai-ka], [aye-ka], [hai-ka], or how?
In this blog post, we’d like to explain it to you once and for all! :)

eye-ka-eyeka-rebus

‘eYeka’ is pronounced as [ai-ka] (eye-ka) and is a combination of 2 parts:

The first part is eye (yes, the organ of sight),

The meaning behind this is probably quite easy to understand. It’s about how our creative community (yes, that means you!) expresses ideas in a visual way, this is why our multimedia player reads everything from text documents to music and videos. By submitting visual creations to respond to our call for entries, you express what you have in mind, which leads us to…

…the second part of eYeka: the Egyptian hieroglyph Ka

The touchdown-like gesture that you can see here is the symbol of the Ka, the Egyptian representation of spiritual essence. The Ka was the “spirit”-part of the human soul, made up of five parts. A living person had Ka from the day of her/his birth to the day of her/his death. The Ka is also the reason why Egyptians mummified the dead; it needed a place to live even after the body died. According to EgyptianMyths.net, the Ka became supreme after death, kings like Ramses II thus claimed to have more than 20 Ka’s!

So in short, eYeka means the soul of the eye :)

What do you think of it?

Encoding Tips & Tricks

Jun 16

Hey all,

Here’s a little advice from apuissance2, to help you get the best quality possible and with a minimum file size for your creations uploaded on Eyeka.

“After a couple of tests and research, here’s one of the best tweaks to upload your videos in a quicktime format.

All you have to do is use the “local network/intranet” settings available via Quicktime, which gives you this:

IMAGE SETTINGS:

In key images, check “each” and type 150

Leave compression quality as is, and for the bandwith, restrain to 1372 Kbit/s (it’s the default setting)

SOUND SETTING:

AAC format, normal quality, 128 kbps”

If you have any other tricks, post them in the Comments of this post!

Thanks to apuissance2!
