Local Student Wins $10,000 in Coke Zero Video Contest

Jun 23

Coca-Cola has announced the winner of “It’s Possible” video competition. Sherwyn Lui, known as “tuapui” in the Eyeka community, takes home S$10,000 and a Coke Zero mini-fridge. His winning entry is currently being aired on television.

Sherwyn’s 30-second animated video titled “Life’s subtle possibilities” shows how some of life’s perceived problems, such as work stress and failed relationships, can be easily overcome.

“I’m thrilled to bag the top prize in the Coke Zero “It’s Possible” contest and even more excited to have my work aired on national television. I’ve always come close to winning, but this is my first artistic win,” says Sherwyn. When asked what he would do with the prize money, he said, “I will use it to upgrade my computer and share it with my mother, who has been really supportive of my work!”

Submissions were assessed based on style, technique, message and how well they expounded the theme of “It’s Possible.” All entries were judged by a line-up of eminent media personalities. The winning video started airing on Singapore’s Mediacorp Channels 5 and 8 last night and will run for a week. You can catch Sherwyn’s Coke Zero TVC tonight on Channel 5’s CSI Miami and on Channel 8’s Glittering Days.

My Club Med Photo Challenge Experience: Felix (Singapore)

Jun 19

“My Club Med Photo Challenge Experience” is a series of posts written by the finalists selected in our recent Club Med campaign. The finalists were flown to Bali, Indonesia (all-expense paid) from May 27-June 1 to participate in daily challenges to determine the best photographer to receive a US$10,000 photography assignment from Club Med.

Being selected from over 100 photographers to go actually to Bali was a satisfaction rather then a surprise, realizing that Travel & Destination is my specialty and some of the other guy’s hobby… I knew my chances are above average to be there.

The Club Med competition was from the start obviously of interest to me. I knew also that this challenge had not that much in common with a real assignment as the design and the restraints of it, are things you never are presented with on a real assignment. A fact that the whole challenge made a fun experience rather than a contest.

When I found out, I flew back to Singapore from another assignment, unpacked and packed my bags and off I went.

I met Suhaimi already on the airport and it was great to hook up with another camera crazy guy. Its one reason this challenge was a lasting experience. You very rarely get the chance to work together with other photographers on something. Its always a task you solve alone or with your team. To meet 9 likeminded “warriors of Light” from all over Asia and sharing over meals and drinks silly thoughts, knowledge and experiences from the day and their past work was the biggest prize you could win.

I think all of us had a great time.

Although it’s a “shoot-out” or competition, I never quite saw Bali this way. I knew that all 9 at the end have similar chances, because the tasks and time constraints are not reflecting what you would normally do. You get thrown out of your comfort zone or working style and you have to try something different and improvise for the most part.

It was also great to see what other guys came up with, being presented with their individual challenges.

The greatest thing for me was that despite the “contest” all the guys were so cool about the whole challenge and were really in to celebrate the moment, rather then to “outdo” your fellow photographer. I honestly liked all of the guys and felt this was like everyone felt as well. It may sound cheesy, but the unexpected chemistry between us is what made everything worthwhile and I’m sure some of us will stay in touch long after this.

I already have plans to meet Gary in Surabya.. (he just does not know it yet ;-) ), but would love to go South Korea and visit Min, to Australia to visit John, to Malaysia, to Japan… Darn Eyeka!!!

Club Med as such was new for me and despite the size the Club Med Bali is a really nice place to make your holidays. The booking numbers speak for themselves. The difference to other resorts and hotels that striked me most, was the fact that everyone seemed constantly active doing something. People coming here seemed energized and fit and they get lots of facilities offered to stay active.

Much left to say.. But doing is better then talking…

Encoding Tips & Tricks

Jun 16

Hey all,

Here’s a little advice from apuissance2, to help you get the best quality possible and with a minimum file size for your creations uploaded on Eyeka.

“After a couple of tests and research, here’s one of the best tweaks to upload your videos in a quicktime format.

All you have to do is use the “local network/intranet” settings available via Quicktime, which gives you this:

IMAGE SETTINGS:

In key images, check “each” and type 150

Leave compression quality as is, and for the bandwith, restrain to 1372 Kbit/s (it’s the default setting)

SOUND SETTING:

AAC format, normal quality, 128 kbps”

If you have any other tricks, post them in the Comments of this post!

Thanks to apuissance2!

My Club Med Photo Challenge Experience: Fumie (Japan)

Jun 15

“My Club Med Photo Challenge Experience” is a series of posts written by the finalists selected in our recent Club Med campaign. The finalists were flown to Bali, Indonesia (all-expense paid) from May 27-June 1 to participate in daily challenges to determine the best photographer to receive a US$10,000 photography assignment from Club Med.

It was a really wonderful experience for me that I was able to participate in the contest.  I enjoyed all of the challenges. The climate and colorful sceneries in Bali were totally different from the northern country (Japan) where I live in.

The rules in the “Challenge” were totally different from the photography I usually enjoy leisurely. I was able to feel the pleasant strain and pressure of the rules. At the same time, I enjoyed a great and happy time with my friends…the contestants and staff from various Asian countries.

I’m very thankful for the 3 great days (regrettably I arrived Bali 2 days later than other members) I spent in Bali, the wonderful experience, special memories and my nice, new friends!

My Club Med Photo Challenge Experience: Suhaimi (Singapore)

Jun 09

“My Club Med Photo Challenge Experience” is a series of posts written by the finalists selected in our recent Club Med campaign. The finalists were flown to Bali, Indonesia (all-expense paid) from May 27-June 1 to participate in daily challenges to determine the best photographer to receive a US$10,000 photography assignment from Club Med.

25th May 2009, 1:02pm….a time that I will remember for the rest of my life when I received that one call from Eyeka informing me that I will be spending my next 6 days in Bali with 9 other photographers around the globe for the Club Med Bali Challenge.

A truly unexpected invitation. Really, me? Really?…Really? I guess words couldn’t describe how happy I was to be one of the selected 10 photographers.

It was a very memorable 6 days in Club Med. The challenge, the interviews, the free flow of food and drinks to complement the really beautiful ClubMed, the people, the outingsand most of all the participants and the organisers for making this trip truly unforgettable.

We had to juggle so many things for our stay there like this performer who performed for the ClubMed guests
during one of the show nights.

It was supposed to be a challenge to find the best of the best among the 10 of us, but the moment the challenge was handed out each day, you could feel the wonderful sense of camaraderie and genuine friendship which allows each of us to discuss our challenge to bring out the best in each of us. Is  this a competition after all? I guess this is what makes it truly memorable in the company of other photographers who is willing to share in a competitive  environment which is scarce in todays’ environment.

Kudos to John (Australia), Felix (Switzerland/Singapore), Min (Korea), Angela (Phillipines), Evangeline (China), CK (Malaysia), Fumie (Japan) and last but not least, my ‘crazy’ roomate Gary (Indonesia). You guys/gals rock!!!! These guys rock our night too on our first night together in Bali…heheheheh.

We had 3 challenges in all. One was an open theme where we were allowed to shoot anything under the sun outside the resort. The other 2 challenges had to be done within the resort. So, what was my photo challenge, you might ask? Well, I had to shoot the *%^$&#^%  and &*^$%$^&……(beeeepppp …..you think I would tell you huh .. :) Lets not spoil the fun just yet. Be patient, Eyeka will unveil the official photo shoot in due course)

The biggest test in the challenge was not to feature any guest faces and yet bring out the beauty of Club Med Bali. Think, think, think, Suhaimi!! Think out of the box. So am I allowed to use the Barbie doll instead? lol

It has been a week after the ClubMed challenge and I am already missing the great company I had in ClubMed Bali. Thank you Eyeka, ClubMed and the rest of the gangs for making it a memorable trip for me. Do keep your eyes glued to Eyeka for the official release of the Club Med Bali Challenge !!! Ooops….I forgot to mention the bonus shots too…..stay tuned!!

Suhaimi Abdullah (Singapore)

P.S. All the photos featured were shot in Club Med :)
